Reinwardt (1773-1854)


Reinwardt Memorial Monument was just established in the opposite side of the front pond of the Presidential Palace of Bogor, Indonesia, in its 189th inauguration of the Bogor Botanical Garden (May 18, 2006).
It is not just a huge plantations collections, but also the world's center of scientific research, especially in plantations. It consists of Bibliotheca Bogorienses (1842), Herbarium Bogoriense (1844), Cibodas Botanical Garden (1860), Treub Laboratory (1884), and Museum & Laboratory Zoology (1894).
This monument itself and the contribution of the institution in the world's science is reflecting the solid as well as close relationship between Germany and Indonesia more then a half century.
Reinwardt was born in 1773 in Luttringhaussen, Germany, he then finished his study in medical and botanical in Amsterdam, where he then became a professor in the University of Harderwijk in his vey young age, 27. In 1816 he was appointed to be Director of Agricultural Affairs, Education & Science on Java. In May 18, 1817 he started to build Bogor Botanical Garden in the former of Buitenzorg Palace.
He returned to Holland in 1823, lectured in the universities an wrote some books before died in 1884. Bravo Herr Reinwardt !!!
